Analysis And Troubleshooting Of Reasons For Sand Suction Pump Failure To Supply Water And Sand

Jul 28, 2024

In the process of using a sand suction pump, especially for the initial users, they often encounter the problem of not being able to fill the water. Some may fill the water but not fill it with sand, or fill it with sand very rarely. In fact, these are two aspects of the problem. Below is a detailed discussion on the causes and solutions of these two problems.
1, Reasons and solutions for sand suction pump not supplying water:
(1) There is air inside the pump that has not been completely discharged. The main reason is that the water intake is not fully filled or the vacuum pump has not fully sucked up the air. Continue to add water until the pump is completely filled. The vacuum pump continues to pump until the air is discharged from the drain pipe.
(2) Air intake through the sand suction pipeline. Carefully check whether the screws of the sand suction pipe joint are tightened and whether the rubber pad is damaged, and promptly block them if found.
(3) The filter screen is blocked and the bottom valve cannot be opened normally. Lift the suction nozzle to check if the filter screen is clogged, remove debris, and check if the bottom valve can be opened flexibly.
(4) The suction height of the sand pump exceeds the suction stroke. Reduce the installation height of the sand suction pump; The sand suction pump on board can be pressurized to increase the ship's draft depth.
(5) The direction of the sand suction pump is incorrect. For motor-driven, it is necessary to first confirm whether the direction of rotation is consistent with that of the sand suction pump; For diesel engine drive, it is necessary to confirm whether the gear position of the gearbox is consistent with the pump direction.
(6) The speed of the sand suction pump is too low. Check if the speed matches, use a tachometer to check and adjust.
The sand suction pump can discharge water normally, but the reason and solution for not being able to discharge sand properly:
When this problem occurs, most users think that there is a problem with the sand suction pump, but in fact, it has nothing to do with the performance of the sand suction pump.
1. The suction sand should not come into contact with the sand source. To increase the weight of the suction nozzle and check and adjust the angle of the suction nozzle.
2. The most common situation is when the sand source is too hard. The first step in this situation is to increase the head of high-pressure flushing and use sufficient impact force to disperse the sand. If the effect is not good, a reamer should be used to stir and cause the sand to collapse.
3. The clearance between the impeller of the sand suction pump and the front lining plate is too large, resulting in a decrease in pump efficiency. Adjust the clearance between the impeller and the lining plate to the minimum, as long as there is no friction.
4. The suction velocity of the sand suction pump is too low. The normal suction of medium coarse sand by the sand suction pump requires a flow rate of 4 meters per second, which is obtained by calculating the flow rate and the cross-sectional area of the sand inlet. By adjusting the flow rate of the pump or replacing the suction pipe, achieve a flow rate of over 4 meters per second.
5. The hose in the sand suction tube cannot withstand negative pressure. This is an easily overlooked issue, as many first-time users do not specify the negative pressure they can withstand when purchasing rubber hoses and instead opt for regular hoses. When the pipe is flattened during normal sand pumping, it is necessary to replace the sand suction hose with a steel ring in a timely manner.
