How To Maintain And Upkeep A Horizontal Slurry Pump?

Sep 09, 2025

Maintaining and upkeep the horizontal slurry pump is an important step in ensuring its efficient and stable operation. Here are some specific maintenance and upkeep suggestions:
1, Pre operation inspection
1. Check the connecting components:
Carefully check whether the bolts at the connection between the pump body and the pipeline, motor, etc. are tightened to ensure that there is no risk of leakage or excessive vibration of the pump body at the connection.
Check the connection of the coupling to ensure its concentricity meets the requirements, in order to avoid additional radial forces causing increased bearing load and pump vibration and noise.
2. Check the lubrication system:
Check if the oil level of the lubricating oil is within the specified range, ensure that the oil level is moderate, and avoid problems caused by insufficient lubrication or high oil level.
Check the quality of the lubricating oil. If there is emulsification, discoloration, or impurities, it should be replaced in a timely manner.

3. Check the sealing system:
For mechanical seals, check if the sealing surface is clean and flat, and if there are any signs of damage to the seals.
Check whether the tightness of the packing seal is appropriate, ensure good sealing effect, and avoid slurry leakage.
2, Maintenance during operation
1. Monitor operating parameters:
Pay close attention to the operating parameters such as flow rate, head, and current of the pump, and take timely measures to detect any abnormal changes.
Pay attention to the vibration and noise of the pump. If the vibration intensifies or abnormal noise occurs, the pump should be stopped for inspection and troubleshooting.
2. Check for leaks:
Regularly inspect the pump body, pipeline connections, and seals for any slurry leakage.
For minor leaks, the tightness of the packing can be adjusted appropriately to solve the problem; If the leakage is severe, the machine must be shut down for inspection and repair.
3. Keep the equipment clean:
Keep the pump body and surrounding environment clean and dry, avoid oil stains and illegal leaks.

3, Maintenance after shutdown
1. Clean the pump body and pipelines of the horizontal slurry pump:
After each shutdown, if corrosive or sediment prone slurry is being transported, the pump body and pipelines should be cleaned promptly with clean water or suitable cleaning solution.

2. Adjust the impeller clearance:
According to the operation of the pump, regularly adjust the gap between the impeller and the front wall of the volute to maintain it within the specified range (such as 0.75-1.50 millimeters) to ensure the efficient operation of the pump.
3. Replace lubricating oil:
Regularly replace lubricating oil according to usage. After running the new pump for 7-10 days, the lubricating oil should be replaced once, and then it should be replaced annually depending on its usage.
4. Manually rotate the pump shaft:
For standby pumps or pumps in a stagnant state, the pump shaft should be manually rotated 90 degrees per week (or 1/4 rotation every 6 days) to ensure even load on the shaft and avoid shaft deformation or damage.
5. Check the shaft seal water and cooling water:
After shutdown, check whether the pressure and flow rate of the shaft seal water and cooling water are appropriate, and adjust or replace the packing as needed.
After stopping the pump, it is recommended to turn off the shaft seal water and cooling water within 15 minutes (the specific time can be determined according to the pump type and operation manual).
4, Other precautions
1. Vacuum pumping operation is strictly prohibited:
The pump will produce severe vibration when operating in a vacuum state, which seriously affects the service life of the pump. Therefore, it is strictly prohibited to operate the pump in a vacuum state.
2. Prevent foreign objects from entering:
It is strictly prohibited for metal objects, objects exceeding the maximum allowable particle size, and long fiber objects to enter the slurry pump to avoid blocking the flow channel or damaging the flow components.

null
3. Monitor bearing temperature:
Regularly check the bearing temperature to ensure that the peak temperature does not exceed 75 ℃. If an abnormal increase in temperature is found, the machine should be stopped immediately for inspection and troubleshooting.
4. Regular inspection and maintenance:
Regularly conduct a comprehensive inspection and maintenance of the slurry pump, including checking for shaft seal leakage, adjusting the tightness of the packing, and inspecting the wear of components such as bearings and couplings.
By following the above maintenance and upkeep recommendations, the efficient and stable operation of the horizontal slurry pump can be ensured, extending its service life and reducing operating costs.

4, Shutdown operation
1. Close the valve:
-Before shutting down, close the drain valve to prevent the medium from flowing back.
2. Stop the motor:

null
-Stop the motor operation and wait for the pump to stop rotating before carrying out maintenance operations.
3. Cleaning and inspection:
-Clean the inlet and outlet pipelines of the pump, check if the pipelines are unobstructed and if there are any leaks.
-Check the pump body, motor, bearings and other components to ensure that there is no damage.
5, Precautions
1. Operator requirements:
-The operator must be familiar with this regulation and master the operation skills of the pump.
-Operators should wear labor protection equipment to ensure personal safety.
2. Prohibited items:
-It is forbidden to adjust the speed and pressure during the operation of the pump.
-It is strictly prohibited to disassemble and repair the pump during operation.
3. Maintenance and upkeep:
-Regularly inspect and maintain the pump to ensure its normal operation.
-If any abnormal situation is found, the machine should be stopped immediately for inspection and troubleshooting.
The operation skills of wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant slurry pumps involve multiple aspects, and operators need to fully master and strictly follow the operating procedures. By proper operation and maintenance, the efficient and stable operation of the pump can be ensured, extending its service life.
