Method Of Centrifugal Pump For Water Intake And Exhaust

Apr 23, 2025

A centrifugal pump relies on the impeller to press out the water in the pump and form a vacuum to enter the water. Therefore, except for centrifugal pumps and self-priming pumps where the impeller is immersed in water, it is generally necessary to fill the pump with water before starting each time, commonly known as adding water.

There are two methods for filling water: one is to directly inject water into the pump (at this time, the vent hole should be opened to exhaust the air inside the pump);

The second is to pump out the gas inside the pump, establish a certain degree of vacuum (at this time, close the gate valve of the outlet pipe), and introduce the water source.

Below, Pump Industry will introduce several methods for filling and exhausting centrifugal pumps:

(1) Install valves at the inlet and outlet to fill water. This method involves installing a valve in the inlet pipe and connecting the water pipe to fill the pump with water.

(2) Fill water with a hand pump. Some water pumps come with a hand pump, and can also be purchased or made into small hand pumps that must be installed with a gate valve at the inlet. After closing the valve, fill the water pump with a small amount of water for water intake. When the hand pump is discharged, it indicates that the pump is full of water and can be turned on for operation.

(3) Use vacuum equipment to exhaust and fill water. The self exhaust of a centrifugal pump and the negative pressure exhaust of a vacuum pump are the same principle, so a water ring vacuum pump is used for exhaust to achieve the function of filling and diverting water.
