What Is The Reason For Water Pump Overcurrent

Oct 21, 2025

1, Check the power supply, which should be within the range specified on the pump nameplate, such as voltage of 440V ± 5% and frequency of 60Hz. Low voltage can easily cause motor overcurrent.

2, Check the control system for loose wiring and appropriate wire diameter. If aluminum wire is used, copper aluminum transition connection should be added.

3, Use a shaking table to check if the insulation of the motor and cable is good, usually approaching infinity. If the insulation is low, it will cause motor overcurrent.

4, Rotate the pump by hand and check for any friction. If there is friction, adjustments should be made (through the pump cover and foot connection screws) to make the pump operate flexibly and freely.

5, Check if there is a significant deviation in the coaxiality between the motor and the pump (for pumps with couplings); Check if the bearings are damaged. Otherwise, the motor will experience overcurrent and loud noise.

6, The speed of the motor measured with a tachometer should be within the range specified on the nameplate. Excessive speed can cause motor overcurrent.

7, Check if the density of the medium conveyed by the pump is higher than the specified value, otherwise it may cause overcurrent.

8, Check if the pump is operating at an excessive flow rate. The super large flow rate is generally manifested in: the outlet valve is opened too large, the outlet diameter is much larger than the outlet diameter of the pump, the inlet pressure of the pump is high, and the selected head of the pump is too high.

For pumps with larger outlet valves and larger outlet diameters, the opening of the outlet valve should be adjusted to ensure that the outlet pressure is within the range specified on the pump nameplate (observe the outlet pressure gauge). Additionally, the pressure gauge should be installed between the pump and the outlet valve. For pumps with high head, the valve should be closed to increase system resistance or the outer diameter of the impeller should be cut to solve the problem.

9, Use a flow meter to check if the flow rate of the pump exceeds the range specified on the pump nameplate, otherwise it may cause overcurrent.
